They neither are not allowed to go out and play nor any friends are allowed to come in their house to play with them. This confined situation is rendering a very bad effect on your child’s mental and ultimately their overall well-being. Children are getting highly affected with this current situation. There are many ways to take care of your child’s mental health amid lockdown and it has become very important today.

I have been reading a lot of articles on various topics related to COVID. Also, thought of contributing a post myself on this topic. So, here I’m with my contribution and I wanted to share 5 ways to take care of your child’s mental health amid lockdown.

Self-regulate your fear and anxiety

It is very natural that a child would perceive and react to a crisis situation the way they see their parents reacting to it. It is obvious that we all are stressed out being at home, virtually locked in and not able to venture out as freely as we used to. Your stress or feeling low should be processed but not in front on your kid. Give your kids the words and language that they can use to express their emotions.

Follow a routine

Children of all age group are bound in some or the other kind of routine. For a school-going kid the regular routine of going to school, tuition, music classes etc. has gone haywire as these activities have all gone online. This sudden change in their routine has put an adverse effect on their mental well-being. Try to give them a routine that is as much close as possible like what they had earlier. This will not just give your kid a plan for the day but will also help you as you are working from home.

While a routine is important, but parents should also try not strictly impose the pre-lockdown schedule. It is important that they have some relaxation like adjusting sleep time, watching TV, playing indoors etc.

Give them the right information & facts

There are lot of information hovering around about the deadly Corona virus and its effect, vaccination etc. And of course, your kids are also very curious to know what’s happening. Though you should not overload your child with all the information and facts about the Corona virus pandemic but equip them with the right information to create the right awareness and that’s the key.

Offer them a personal space

Everyone needs a personal space and your kids are not any exception. Give them that personal space sometime where they can be on their own, without anyone behind them and nagging continuously to do some or the other thing. During this pandemic situation and lockdown with lot of restrictions we are continuously with our friends and family with that personal time being lost somewhere. Even kids are used to be without their parents at least sometime of the day. Hence, it’s better to give them that ME time for their own mental good.

Engage, interact and involve your child

The key to keep your child busy is to engage with them and also involve them in the household chores. Also, allow them to interact at regular interval with their friends, relatives and neighbours. If you have children below 5 years, it can be a bit easy. You can draw reference to the cartoon characters on TV and talk to them about the virus, how they stay safe indoors etc. With the kids of middle age, it’s a bit tricky. Let your house be unorganised at times and be their play ground to run around. Allow them to watch TV, play video games for some time, follow their hobbies like painting, music, talking to their friends over video call etc. This will relieve that stress out of their mind that they go through for being indoors all the time.

This is all about the 5 ways to take care of your child’s health amid lockdown. Let me know your thoughts on this and also you can share your tips that we can follow to help many parents to tackle the current situation.
