The landscape of digital marketing is changing at a very fast pace in a very short span of time. It was not a very long time that marketers were all into organic Facebook traffic. But unfortunately, organic reach in Facebook has taken a nosedive with the efficacy of its paid advertising technologies became clear. With the changing trend marketers inclined towards platforms like Snapchat and Periscope. But those channels also replaced with very fast with Instagram Stories and Facebook Live and drastically changed the modern trends in digital marketing.
With this fast-changing facets of online platforms it is very much important for the marketers to identify right marketing trends and grab the opportunity. When you do that, you can ride that wave as the popularity of the specific trend grows to manyfold. Realizing and acquiring the right digital marketing plan can bring in more brand awareness, traffic, leads and sales. I tried to put across the modern trends in digital marketing that marketers are following today to get traffic, leads and sales for their business.
1. Email marketing 2.0
You must be thinking why email marketing has made to this list as this is not a new marketing tool. Yes, you are right – email marketing is one of the old methods that marketers used to follow to reach their potential customers via online and stay in touch with them.
But with the advent of social media marketing, email became uncool and gradually lost its charm. Marketers started to think why to invest in email marketing when they can achieve more via social media marketing. In fact, many marketers even thought that email marketing will be a dead strategy in due course of time.
However, email marketing had never fell completely out of fashion. Rather, this not-so-modern online marketing strategy is taking a giant leap to come back to the arena of digital marketing, especially with the invent of automation to aid creating customer journeys.
Two of the most talked about microtrends in this arena are:
ConvertKit – an emerging player in the ESP space
Substack – a platform for writers who run paid newsletters
2. Influencer marketing
According to a survey of Social Publi, around 93% of marketers today are inclined to and are using influencer marketing already. The reason for that is this mode of marketing can often bring in a higher ROI compared to content marketing, PPC (pay-per-click) advertising or search engine optimization (SEO). However, on the flip side, with the increase in the number of marketers opting for influencer marketing the cost is increasing. Having said that, it’s taking the marketing strategy to saturation.
In the recent trend it is seen that marketers are inclined more towards microinfluencers, who are individuals on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc. and have relatively lesser number of followers. There are few advantages to work with microinfluencers. One of that is that their followers tend to be comprised of more specific demographics, compared to someone with 20 million followers and are highly engaged, which the marketers want. Marketers prefer this specificity as it makes it easy to reach the target audiences faster. And most importantly, the microinfluencers generally charge way less compared to the influencers with millions of followers. Hence brands of all sizes look for these influencers.
- Video is the new trend
This post of modern trends in digital marketing will remain incomplete if I don’t talk about video, which has become the default medium today. According to a YouTube report, internet users watch around 1 billion hours of videos every day. Pheww… That is an astounding number, isn’t it? YouTube is just one of many digital marketing channels out there that supports video.
Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Pinterest – all these social media platforms support video content. Seeing the current trend, video is becoming the default medium today. Many are transitioning to become the video first social network. Marketers who learn the skills like planning, scripting, shooting, editing and graphics and create engaging videos will be a few steps ahead of those who only depends on text-based blog posts.
